Why choose the SPIFE Cholesterol Profile?
The Helena Cholesterol Profile directly measures HDL, LDL, VLDL, and Lp(a) cholesterol in a single run, providing excellent correlation to gold-standard laboratory methods. Measuring the cholesterol portion of Lp(a), as the Helena method does, has the highest odds ratio for predicting high-risk plaques when compared to mass assays.
What is Lp(a)?
Lipoprotein(a) is a complex fatty particle clearly identified as a causal factor of myocardial infarction and considered a significant, independent risk factor for ischemic events. Lp(a) is highly genetic with 20% of the population estimated to have significant elevations.
What can be done about the risk of Lp(a)?
At present there are no drugs directly targeting Lp(a), however, new pharmaceutical agents that dramatically reduce Lp(a) levels are in late-stage clinical trials. In 2024 the National Lipid Association officially endorsed one-time Lp(a) screening for everyone, preferably in their twenties, to identify risk and guide treatment decisions.
