SPIFE Cholesterol Profile
Evidence continues to mount that Helena's Cholesterol Profile results have a strong correlation to CHD, especially Lipoprotein(a). Statistically, one in five has an elevated Lp(a) level. Helena Cholesterol Profile allows direct measurement of HDL, LDL and VLDL cholesterol along with Lp(a) cholesterol in a single run with excellent correlation to the laboratory reference method and an excellent reimbursement margin.
Simultaneous - Direct HDL, LDL, VLDL and Lp(a)-C in one run
Accurate provides a broadcut LDL like the CDC reference method
Easy - Analyze 100 samples in 80 minutes with little hands-on time.

Lp(a) Consensus Statement: Screening a Must with Moderate to High CVD Risk
At the EAS 2010 Congress, the European Atherosclerosis Society issued a consensus statement http://www.theheart.org/article/1090493.do recommending lipoprotein(a) screening of patients at moderate or higher cardiovascular disease risk. This comes after two studies in 2009 proved that Lp(a) causes coronary heart disease.
In December 2009, the work of the PROCARDIS Consortium at the University of Oxford was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. They tested nearly 50,000 genetic variants looking for a link to early heart disease and found two both strongly associated with increased Lp(a) levels. Their conclusion: Lp(a) is a causal factor in CHD. The June 10, 2009 issue of JAMA included a report from researchers at Copenhagen University. They examined genetic data on over 41,000 people and found that those with the top 10% of Lp(a) had two to three times the risk of heart disease.2
Now the good news: the data also suggest lowering Lp(a) levels will lower the risk of disease.3 The European Atherosclerosis Society recommends patients with an elevated Lp(a) take niacin to reduce their risks. Scientists at Brigham & Women’s Hospital Harvard Medical School measured Lp(a) in nearly 28,000 menopausal women and found those with the highest Lp(a) levels had the highest probability of heart disease. Hormone replacement reduced their Lp(a) and nearly abolished their added risk of CHD. They concluded that Lp(a) and HRT need to be considered in menopausal women.4
Of course, step one is to know your Lp(a) level. The SPIFE Cholesterol method for measuring HDL, LDL, VLDL and Lp(a)-c has proven to be more accurate than mass assays for measuring Lp(a). It isn’t effected by isoform size. SPIFE Cholesterol has the added benefit of a favorable reimbursement margin. SPIFE kits are available for performing up to 100 profiles per gel.
